Earlier this year, I was invited to serve as a juror for this year's Architizer Vision Awards. A one of a kind program that celebrates architectural ideas and imagery - renderings, drawings, photographs, and film. You can see the full panel of jurors on the Vision Awards jury page.

My intent was to look past technical polish and evaluate how well each entry handled storytelling, human perspective.. The strongest submissions weren't the ones that showed off the most computational polish/power. They were the ones where a clear artistic vision guided every choice, and the technology stayed in service of it.

That is the larger takeaway for me. Rendering engines and generative AI keep getting better, and they have changed how architectural images are made. But tools can't decide what an image should mean and how it wants to read to the human eye... Composition, restraint, narrative, and emotional intent still come from the trained eye and the human mind behind the work. As execution gets easier, that judgment matters more, not less.
