NOTES: The self-taught architect is a myth. Why do we continue to romanticize the "grind" of solo study? When I took my registration exams about a decade ago, I indeed went through this alone. But it was not necessary. We treated the exam as a collective effort. This is an approach to be mastered with experience. If the profession refuses to reform the barrier to entry, then those of us within the gates must provide the blueprints for access. We taught candidates to think like the exam writers, to anticipate the traps within the vignettes, and to recognize that "design" in the context of the ARE is a performance of compliance rather than an expression of practice. While counterintuitive, disconnecting the office experience from what the exam asks for seems to be the only way to address some aspects of the exam successfully.
